What is recorded here
Penitential Station at Roscam, County Galway, is a holed stone lying on a 20th-century grave plot inside an early ecclesiastical enclosure. Wakeman recorded it standing upright near the church in 1895, but it has since fallen or been laid down beside a medieval graveslab. The off-centre hole pierces the top right of the rectangular slab, inviting wonder about whether people once marked time, paid vows or simply recognised a place through that small opening.
This holed stone has been placed lying on a 20th-century grave plot in the graveyard (GA094-072003-) within the early ecclesiastical enclosure (GA094-072002-) at Roscam. When recorded by Wakeman (1895, 286) it was standing upright in the graveyard, about 50m to the SE of the church (GA094-072001-). The part of the slab (L 0.66m; Wth 0.43m; T 0.13m) that would have been visible when it was upright is rectangular in shape but the lower section is roughly subtiangular. The hole (diam. 0.09m) which pierces the stone is set off-centre to the top right. A medieval graveslab (GA094-072006-) has also been placed on the grave plot, to the S of the stone.

Likely dating to the early Christian period, this holed stone may have had a ritual or symbolic function, possibly associated with penitential practices or as a boundary marker. Its later placement on a 20th-century grave plot suggests continued local reverence or repurposing of the stone.
