Explorer Tom Swallow Falls makes enough noise to interrupt Tom in mid-sentence, a rare and welcome achievement. The Afon Llugwy drops through a rocky wooded gorge west of Betws-y-Coed, spreading into white ribbons that give Rhaeadr Ewynnol its famous shape. After heavy rain it is a much louder spectacle; in any weather the river has no interest in posing politely for a photograph. The waterfall is about 42 metres high, with native woodland and the wider Gwydir landscape around it. Viewing platforms let visitors see the main cascade without committing to a long forest walk. Steps lead to lower angles, while the more demanding paths nearby offer a broader sense of how water has cut through the valley. Look at the rock as well as the spray; the falls make more sense as part of a gorge than as a single dramatic drop. Tom calls it the river's staircase, though the river is coming down considerably faster than he would. The short viewing visit has an entry charge, and paths can be slippery or steep. Wear shoes that grip and stay behind barriers. Swallow Falls lies a few miles from Betws-y-Coed, with bus links and roadside parking in the area; check the current arrangements before going. If you want to walk from the village, allow more time than a quick stop by car. The best visit is the one that lets you pause long enough to hear the different rhythms of the water.
