Paviland Main Cliff consists mainly of Carboniferous limestone, formed around 315–360 million years ago through the accumulation of marine sediments. The cliff is notable for its exposure of fossil-rich rock layers and its proximity to the famous Paviland Cave, where the "Red Lady of Paviland" – a human skeleton stained with red ochre – was discovered in 1823.
