Patrick Pearse led the Easter Rising in 1916 and faced a firing squad at Kilmainham Gaol before dying at thirty-six. His tragedy is that he refused to surrender, believing submission would destroy the soul of the rebellion. That choice turned a defeated military campaign into a lasting political awakening.
