Patrick Mary O'Donnell was born on 2 February 1897 at Main Street, Fethard, County Tipperary, Ireland, the son of Thomas and Johanna O'Donnell, who ran a drapery business. He left that small town behind to become Archbishop of Brisbane, serving from 1965 until 1973. The ordinary street where a shopkeeper's child first drew breath later became the starting point for a man who shaped Catholic life across Queensland.
