On the crest of Montpellier Hill, beside the ruinous Hell Fire Club, a stripped cairn still marks an ancient passage tomb. People may have climbed this ridge to bury their dead beneath open sky, choosing a vantage point that watched the northern and eastern horizons. The tomb belongs to a wider ring of chambered graves along the Dublin and Wicklow mountains, suggesting the hill was a familiar death-place long before the lodge gave it a dangerous name.
This passage tomb and its adjacent companion (DU025-001001-) are located on the crest of Montpellier Hill, just SE of a ruinous hunting lodge called the Hell Fire Club (DU025-001003-). The monument enjoys panoramic views N and E with those to the S and W somewhat restricted by forestry. These passage tombs are part of a cluster of passage tombs situated largely along the N and W perimeter slopes of the Dublin and Wicklow mountains.
All that survives of this monument are traces of a denuded cairn topped with a trigonometric station (diam. 18m) (Herity 1974, 257; Price 1942, 66 Healy 1875, 1-19).
