Pant is the station where Brecon Mountain Railway starts climbing from Merthyr Tydfil towards reservoirs and hills. Its name is short; the day out it launches is anything but. Hear the locomotive working, peer into the engineering workshop and then settle into a carriage as the town gives way to Bannau Brycheiniog. The heritage line follows part of the old Brecon and Merthyr Railway route through the Taf Fechan valley. Trains run from Pant past Pontsticill Reservoir to Torpantau, with a pause at Pontsticill on the return trip. At Pant, the operator provides a ticket office, tearoom, shop, toilets and a viewing area for the workshop where engines and carriages are maintained. The machinery makes the station a destination, not merely a place to queue. Arrive early enough to watch the engine prepare and inspect the workshop from its public viewing area when open. The route then changes scene from valley to water and high ground. On the way back, Pontsticill's lakeside stop gives a different angle on the reservoir before Pant welcomes you home. If you have chosen an open-sided carriage, the smoke and weather will join the story whether invited or not. Trains run on selected dates; check the operator's current timetable and book the right service rather than assuming daily departures. Pant has paid parking after a free first hour, with accessible toilets and baby changing. Some carriage spaces for manual wheelchairs need advance booking, so contact the railway about individual access. The carriages are unheated; take a layer even when the station feels warm.
