Pagan cemetery

Court tomb

What is recorded here

Ancestral court tombs at Dookinelly, County Mayo, predate Christianity by several thousand years. People may have gathered there to honour ancestors, mark territory or perform ritual long before written history. The name “pagan cemetery” preserves that older mystery rather than explaining it away.
See linked document with details from Ruaidhrí de Valera and Seán Ó Nualláin, Survey of the Megalithic Tombs of Ireland. Volume II. County Mayo. (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1964) Date of upload: 3 January 2012

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
