Explorer Tom Enclosure in Ross ended up in the wrong place because the map maker had a bad day and misplaced his pencil. It’s just a vague idea of where an enclosure should be, floating in the ether like a ghost that can’t find its way home. Tell the kids it's a castle. Close enough.
Castle Drum (in ruins)Castle, unclassified · 1312 ydExplorer Tom Castle Drum in Castledrum sounds like a percussion instrument, but it’s actually just a castle of the ridge. It ended up in the wrong place because someone misread the map and got confused. Perfect spot to practise your best tour-guide voice.
Saint Gobnait's Catholic ChurchChurch/chapel · 1324 ydExplorer Tom Saint Gobnait's Catholic Church in Lassaboy thinks Dublin tourists are just noisy pigeons with better shoes. It’s a Gothic beauty that prefers the company of sheep and silence. Take a mate and argue about what it was for.
Keel HouseHouse · 1.2 miExplorer Tom Keel House in Keel hums an old folk song about its jail wing days. It thinks that makes it sound very dignified and serious. Visit, then text me what you think. I'll pretend to read it.
CastleCastle, tower house · 1.9 miExplorer Tom Castle in Kilcolman is secretly proud of the potato it grew on its roof last summer. It’s a tower house that forgot how to be tall. Everyone thinks it’s famous, but it just wants some quiet time. Stand where the owner stood and practise looking smug.
Clash IslandIslet · 3.1 miExplorer Tom Clash Island sounds like what happens when two drunk fishermen argue about whose turn it is to bail. Saint Patrick probably called it a mess before even arriving in the country. Stand back, squint, and it looks like a castle.
Cloon IslandIsland · 3.6 miExplorer Tom Cloon Island used to be run by a matchmaker who paired off lonely boats with their moorings. Now it just sits there, judging everyone who passes by with that quiet, lough-side stare. Bring sandwiches, the gulls will thank you.
Glanbrack MountainMountain / peak · 3.6 miExplorer Tom Glanbrack Mountain in Kerry is planning a lavish retirement party next autumn, inviting only the local birch trees and a few stubborn scots pines to join in. It wants to be remembered as the king of the glen, even if nobody else knows where it actually is. It's free, it's odd, what more do you want?
Explorer Tom Baurtregaum means top of the three hollows, which sounds like a game I might invent to avoid saying I am lost. At 851 metres it is the highest mountain in Kerry's Slieve Mish range, rising over the eastern end of the Dingle Peninsula. Scholars suggest the three hollows are the Derrymore, Derryquay and Curraheen valleys cut into its sides. A ridge links it with Caherconree, another substantial summit. I would announce I have found a fourth hollow just to cause trouble, but the map would put me right. Plan this as a mountain walk with proper gear, navigation and weather checks, and respect farmland on the approach. From a safe height, turn around and try to identify each valley. The name becomes a landscape lesson rather than a tongue-twister.
Explorer Tom King Puck statue in Killorglin, County Kerry has a ghost tenant who is too lazy to haunt it because he prefers watching TV in peace. Bring a coin for luck and keep it in your pocket.
Explorer Tom Scotia's Grave in County Kerry holds the fake world record for being the most confusingly named burial site in the entire hemisphere. It claims to be Egyptian, Irish, and mythical all at once with zero shame. Take a mate and argue about what it was for.
Explorer Tom Caherconree Promontory Fort is perched on a cliff like it’s waiting for someone to buy it a round after three pints. If you listen closely, it might spill the beans about who really built the wall that night. A good place to forget your phone for ten minutes.
