Osborn Bergin

Osborn Bergin was born in Cork city on 26 November 1873, the eldest son in a large household where spoken Irish flowed freely through West Munster homes. He mastered that living language quickly, became a lecturer at Queen's College Cork by 1897, and carried his nationalist convictions without party ties into every classroom and journal page. His mind worked in paradoxes: he discovered Bergin's law yet never truly believed it, feuded with famous writers while cherishing quiet friends, and resigned a senior Dublin post within a year without explaining why. He died unmarried in a nursing home in Dublin in 1950, leaving behind poetry, translations, and a rule that still bends Old Irish sentences into shape.
