Detached three-bay single-storey former gate lodge, built c.1890, with cast-iron veranda and flat-roofed rear extension. Now in use as offices. Pitched natural slate roof with black clay ridge tiles set behind slightly raised gables having moulded raking granite coping. Single red brick chimneystack with yellow brick courses and granite cornice. Lead-lined roof to veranda and rear extension. Replacement moulded cast-iron guttering and cast-iron downpipes. Red brick walls laid in Flemish bond with lime pointing and chamfered granite ashlar plinth course. Segmental-headed window openings set in chamfered granite ashlar frames with granite sills and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows with ogee horns. Square-headed window opening to east gable with timber casement window, set in chamfered granite ashlar surround with granite apron and moulded yellow brick hood cornice. Segmental-headed door opening set in stop-chamfered granite ashlar surround with timber panelled door having glazed upper panels. Door opens onto granite paved platform with clustered cast-iron colonettes having foliate capitals, rosette panels and scrolled iron brackets supporting veranda roof and enclosed by recent glass balustrades with stainless steel handrail.

Built as the gate lodge to the Ordnance Survey complex, the building has undergone a recent restoration and retains much of its late nineteenth-century character and external detailing. The building introduces the visitor to the site, of which it forms part of a wider collection of impressive buildings associated with the Ordnance Survey, representing architectural styles from the early eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries.
