Operation Chariot was a British Royal Navy commando raid on the French port of St. Nazaire in World War II, launched from this harbour on 28 March 1942, with the aim of destroying the Normandy dry dock to hinder the German naval threat. The operation, one of the most successful and costly Allied raids of the war, resulted in the deaths of 168 personnel and earned five Victoria Crosses, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy.
