On 11 February 1990, an unarmed Gazelle helicopter supporting a ground patrol took heavy machine-gun fire from the Provisional IRA East Tyrone Brigade between Augher and Derrygorry. The borderlands had become a killing zone where ordinary patrols faced professional ambush, yet the men survived the descent into grass and shock.
