1988 Lisburn van bombing

On 15 June 1988, an unmarked van carrying six off-duty British soldiers exploded in Lisburn Market Square at the end of a charity marathon, killing all six men and wounding eleven civilians. The Provisional Irish Republican Army had hidden a booby-trap bomb beneath the vehicle, turning a moment of public celebration into sudden death. Lisburn hosts the British Army headquarters in Northern Ireland, making the square a visible target during The Troubles.
