What is recorded here
Oliver Goldsmith may have been born in Elphin, County Roscommon, on 10 November 1728, though Ballymahon, County Longford, also claims him. That small Irish town either gave the world its most versatile Georgian writer or lost the honour to its neighbour. Either way, Elphin stands at the edge of a great life, waiting for someone to confirm which child first drew breath there.
