Old Court

Five-bay two-storey house, built c. 1700, with remains of projection to rear and to west gable. Converted to farm building c. 1810. Pitched corrugated-iron roof with brick chimneystacks. Rubble limestone walls, with moulded limestone cornice to fornt elevation, and limestone eaves course to rear. Plaster to upper half of front elevation for former slate-hanging. Square-headed window openings, now blocked up, with some moulded limestone sills. Central square-headed door opening to front elevation, now blocked. Round-arch vehicular entrance inserted to rear wall. Remains of internal stuccowork on west wall between ground and first floor fireplaces. Projection to rear contains remains of domed brick wall oven. Farmyard to north of house. Tree-lined linear avenue to south, partly reused for nineteenth-century house, and southern section now part of public road.

These are the intriguing remains of an early eighteenth-century house, now incorporated into a farmyard since the early nineteenth century. It retains much of its historic form and massing along with historic fabric such as moulded sills, limestone cornice, brick-domed bread oven and internal stucco work. An unusual feature to survive is its linear tree-lined avenue to the south.
