This black commemorative plaque records: The Old Burial Ground A mediaeval chapel of ease stood here until 1795 when a new church was endowed by the Sims family of Denton. It remained a place of worship until 1857 when the present Parish Churh of St. Mary the Virgin was built. It is the burial place of many generations of Wheatley people.
The Old Burial Ground in Wheatley served as a site for religious services and burials from medieval times, initially housing a chapel of ease until 1795, and continued to be used for interments through the construction of St. Mary the Virgin Parish Church in 1857, marking it as a significant historical and cultural site for local heritage.
