The 'old bridge' marked on the 1841 and 1909 editions 6-inch maps may have been built on the site of an earlier bridge which is marked on the Down Survey (1655-6) map; no trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran.
