Ogham stone in Whitefield

Four ogham stones [KE057-107----, KE057-107002-, KE057-107003- KE057-107004-] were displayed by the Macgillycuddy of the Reeks at the Dublin Exhibtion in 1853. At least two of these (KE057-107002- and KE057-107----) were discovered in a Man-made underground passage in this townland (Macalister 1945, 208). The Man-made underground passage, not marked on the OS maps, is locally reputed to have been located on the NW side of Baunclune House, but no surface trace of it remains. Three of these ogham stones are in the National Museum of Ireland (Reg. No. W10-12; DU018-362----; DU018-363----; DU018-364----). The fourth stone (NMI Reg. no. W9) is in Kerry County Museum, Tralee (KCM LI992:31; KE029-320----). For this stone see DU018-363----. This pillar, now broken on top, measures at least 1.16m in height and is .2m x .2m at base. The inscription is neatly executed on two angles, reading up-up. Macalister (1945, 211, no. 217) read it as: NOCATI MAQI MAQI-REC [. . .] MAQI MUCOI UDDAMI. There is a rough cut cross on each face of the stone.
