Ogham stone in Whitefield

Four ogham stones from Whitefield were displayed by the Macgillycuddy of the Reeks at the Dublin Exhibition in 1853. At least two of these, (this and KE057-107002-), were discovered in a Man-made underground passage in this townland (Macalister 1945, 208). The Man-made underground passage, not marked on the OS maps, is locally reputed to have been located on the NW side of Baunclune House, but no surface trace of it remains. Three of these ogham stones are in the National Museum of Ireland (Reg. No. W10-12; DU018-362----; DU018-363----; DU018-364----). This, the fourth stone (NMI Reg. no. W9), is in Kerry County Museum, Tralee (KCM LI992:31, see KE029-320----). This regular slab measures at least 1.14m in height and .28m x .14m at base. Its deeply carved inscription is evenly spaced along the dexter angle and across its top. Macalister (1945, 209, no. 215) read this as: ALATTO CELI BATTIGNI. The N is erroneously depicted as a Q.
