Ogham stone in Derk

Ogham stone

What is recorded here

Macalister (1945, 134) records this stone as follows: 'A slaty stone, 3 feet 8 inches x 1 foot 6 inches x 0 foot 6 inches. Maximum breadth at the top, and tapering downward to a point. Letters pocked and in good condition (up-top-down) Maqi-Aira(l?) maq Maq-Trenn(i?). . . . . On account of its orthographical eccentricities, and the unlikeness of the stone to anything which an Ogham carver would naturally choose, I am quite sceptical as to the authenticity of this inscription. It is now in the National Museum of Ireland.' (DU018-394----) Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 16 April 2013
