Six ogham stones stood embedded in a buried passage at Ballyhank when dug out in 1846, one broken name lost at the top, the others still sharp enough to read. They traveled to Dublin and joined the national collection, pulling a hidden chamber into the light of history. The passage may have stored treasure, bodies or memory, but the stones themselves were the point: a row of names set into dark earth, waiting for someone to dig them out and listen.
Discovered in 1846 built into a Man-made underground passage (CO085-067002-), in the SW quadrant of a ringfort (CO085-067001-), with five other ogham stones (CO085-067004-) (CO085-067005-) (CO085-067006-) (CO085-067007-) (CO085-067008-), now in the collection of the National Museum of Ireland (see DU018-369----). The stone (0.6m; 0.3m x 0.1m) is broken and missing the first part of the inscription, which Macalister (1945, 93, no. 97) gave as ...]LL MAQI VORRTIGURN. According to Macalister this is a secondary inscription, the older, apparently copied 'in minute pin-scrapes on the unoccupied part of the second inscribed angle', is given as DIOBI (ibid.). (Power et al. 1997, no. 7948)
