ODavorens Sch (Site of)

School

What is recorded here

ODavorens Sch (Site of) is a school site in County Clare, Ireland, named on the 1916 map within Cathair Mhic Neachtain. It has been regarded as the home of a famous medieval law school run by the O'Davoren family, though evidence remains uncertain. The nearby late medieval building Cabhail Tighe Breac may have served that purpose instead, as excavation there in 2008 revealed supporting features.
Listed as ‘School’ in the SMR (1992) and the RMP (1996) and named ‘O’Davoren’s Sch. (Site of)’ on the 1916 OS 6-inch map within Cathair Mhic Neachtain (CL009-001010-). The fort has been regarded as the home of one of Ireland's most famous medieval law schools run by the O'Davoren family. However, according to FitzPatrick (2008, 58-9) it is unsure whether the cashel was ever actually used as the location for the law school of the brehon line. She notes that the late medieval building known as ‘Cabhail Tighe Breac’ (CL009-001009-) in the SW end of the townland has many attributes that might lend themselves to that purpose. Excavation at Cabhail Tighe Breac in 2008 revealed further evidence to support this. Caher Mhic Neachtain is a National Monument in State Care, no. 354.
