Oakpark House

Gothic Revival crenellated wing comprising two-bay two-storey central block flanked by two-bay single-storey blocks, built c.1830, attached to U-plan three-bay two-storey house, rebuilt c.1930, following burning of original house, built c. 1750. Flat roof with rendered crenellated parapets. Roughcast rendered walls. Blind pointed arch window openings and square-headed openings with uPVC windows having render hood-mouldings. Rubble stone walled garden to west having segmental-arched entrance with dressed voussoirs. Two-stage crenellated folly tower to western wall, having rubble stone walls with cut stringcourse, crenellated battlements and blind round-headed openings to upper stage beneath render label mouldings. Round-profile rubble stone folly to south-west of site, with blind pointed arch openings. Square-profile cut limestone gated piers having cut capitals, flanking cast-iron gates and railings on cut limestone plinth walls. Multiple-bay single- and two-storey former gate lodge, now altered and extended to north-east.

Though the original house was destroyed by fire and subsequently rebuilt, its east wing, walled garden, follies and entrance sweep survive as indicators of the grandeur and wealth of the estate in the past. The original house was apparently built c.1750 by the Bowan-Colhurst family, who had previously lived at the tower house in Carrigdrohid. The wing and follies would appear to have been part of a nineteenth century building campaign, suggested by their Gothic Revival style.
