(nr) Ewes Castle

Well (medieval)

What is recorded here

Ewes Castle is a medieval well in the Scottish Borders, not a grand stone palace. It may have given water to horses, people or travelling carts, while the castle part sounds like a later invention born from pride or mistake. That uncertainty makes the site more interesting because ordinary water can become legendary when people repeat its name.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records (nr) Ewes Castle as Well (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
