Mud, memory and measurement: a small excavation in Castletroy, County Limerick, where six faint features were opened beside Schoolhouse Road. Some stretched like forgotten paths, others rounded like hollow cups, and one held burnt soil, as if heat had once lived there. The land keeps its shape while people come and go, but the digging makes that shape speak for a moment.

On a gentle SSW-facing slope, in pasture, on the N side of Schoolhouse Road, Castletroy. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Situated due N of miscellaneous excavations (LI005-086----) (License No. 02E1787) which took place in 2002 on the adjacent distributor road. Identified by Flor Hurley in 2003 during monitoring (License No. 03E1382) for a housing scheme known as Glantan. The features (F1-F6) were excavated (License No. 03E1717) by Niamh O’ Callaghan later in 2003 and consisted of three linear features and three subcircular-shaped features. The former consist of a linear feature (L 7m; Wth 1.3m) aligned NW-SE, a second linear feature (L c. 9m; Wth 0.75-0.9m) aligned ENE-WSW and a third linear feature (L 3m; Wth 0.27m) aligned N-S. The latter consist of an irregular subcircular-shaped feature (L 1.17m E-W; 1.07m N-S), a subcircular-shaped spread (0.42m N-S; 0.34m E-W) and an oval-shaped spread of burnt soil (0.64m N-S; 1.04m E-W) ('Callaghan 2006, 309).
