What is recorded here

This site was excavated (Licence no. 05E0414ext.) within Killeen Castle Demesne in advance of development. Located north of Killeen Castle (ME038-012----) and beyond the early enclosure (ME038-050001-) this kiln was cut partially into bedrock. Stone built it measured 5.5m in overall diameter and survived to a maximum of 0.8m in depth. There were three flues: the main to the south, a truncated flue to the east and a deliberately blocked flue to the NW. The base was sealed by a hard deposit of lime. A radiocarbon date of AD1300-1440 was obtained (Baker 2009, 66). Compiled by: Christine Baker Date of upload: 22 February 2015
