Punchersgrange castle vanished before the Down Survey of 1655-6, leaving behind only a canon ball and the memory of Colonel Hewson dismantling it in 1649. Mr. Loughlin could still point to its exact spot, proving that even erased buildings keep their shape in local hands. The castle did not need stones to remain real; it needed witnesses.

Shown on the Down Survey (1655-6). While its precise location is unknown, it was said to have stood on the land of Mr. Loughlin, who could point out its traditional location. A canon ball dug up on the site was thought to have come from the cannon of Colonel Hewson who was believed to have dismantled the castle in 1649 (JKAS 1960, 100).
