North Scar is a sea cliff composed primarily of Jurassic limestone, formed around 150 to 190 million years ago through the accumulation of marine sediments. It is notable for its exposure of the Whitby Mudstone Formation, which is significant for fossil preservation and geological study in the North York Moors region.
