Newtownbarry House

Detached two-bay single-storey worker's house with half-dormer attic, extant 1839, on T-shaped plan centred on two-bay single-storey lean-to projecting porch; three- or four-bay full-height rear (south) elevation. Hipped slate roof centred on gablets to window openings to half-dormer attic (south); lean-to slate roof (porch), terracotta ridge tiles centred on fine roughcast chimney stack having lichen-spotted capping supporting terracotta pot, decorative timber bargeboards to gablets, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered slate flagged eaves retaining cast-iron downpipes. Part creeper- or ivy-covered fine roughcast coursed rubble stone walls with concealed flush quoins to corners. Square-headed window openings with lichen-spotted cut-granite sills, and concealed dressings framing timber casement windows. Set in wooded grounds shared with Newtownbarry House.

A house contributing positively to the group and setting values of the Newtownbarry House estate with the architectural value of the composition, one most likely intended for occupation by the head gardener of an adjoining walled garden marked on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey (surveyed 1839; published 1841), suggested by such attributes as the compact rectilinear plan form centred on an expressed, albeit later porch; the somewhat disproportionate bias of solid to void in the massing; and the miniature gablets embellishing the roofline.
