Newcastle General Cemetery opened in 1836 with John Dobson’s twin chapels and massive gate piers, capturing a city at the peak of its achievement. Dobson himself sleeps beneath the grass, surrounded by monuments that still display the bold skill of local craftsmen. The triangular ground remains a registered historic park where serpentine paths and straight walks preserve the shape of that confident era.
