Newcastle Emlyn Castle was built by the de Harcourt family in the 12th or 13th century and later held by the powerful Lord Rhys and his descendants of the House of Dinefwr. It is important as a key medieval stronghold in the struggle between Welsh princes and English lords in the Welsh Marches.
