New Castle in County Limerick belongs to the Clanwilliam area and appeared in a 1619 grant to H. Holcroft, who received the castle and bawn of Newcastle. No surface remains are visible now, but the name still points to a defended household place buried beneath grass, roadwork or forgetting. The land may have worn the walls away while memory kept the shape of the bawn.
