Egerton Coghill was born in Castletownshend in 1853, the second son of a painter and brother to a Victoria Cross hero. He abandoned engineering for art, studied in Paris and Düsseldorf, then returned to paint the familiar Cork landscapes he knew by heart. He died in England in 1921 but was brought back two years later to rest at St Barrahane’s churchyard, completing a life that kept coming home to the place it began.
