The National Theatre's South Bank home opened in stages from 1976 after the company had worked at the Old Vic since 1963. Denys Lasdun arranged three theatres, workshops and public terraces as one concrete landscape, making scene building, rehearsal and performance part of a permanent national institution.

Why it was built

A national company needed its own home with different auditoriums, large workshops, rehearsal rooms and public space able to support a broad repertory.

People and work

Laurence Olivier led the first company, Denys Lasdun designed the building, and actors, makers, technicians and front-of-house workers filled its linked spaces.

How it changed

The stages opened from 1976, the smallest theatre was later rebuilt and renamed, and major repairs updated workshops and public areas without removing Lasdun's terraces.

What survives

The Olivier, Lyttelton and Dorfman theatres, concrete foyers, fly towers, workshops and river terraces remain as a listed working complex.

Why it mattered

The National Theatre mattered because it gave publicly supported drama a permanent factory and stage, exposing the work behind performance as part of national cultural life.
