National Museum of Ireland Collins Barracks

Gateway to former Collins Barracks, erected 1816, comprising segmental-arched carriage opening having square-headed pedestrian opening set within snecked calp limestone wall to east. Cut granite to front (south) elevation, granite parapet and cornice over carriage arch, granite coping over flanking walls. Cut granite voussoirs and double-leaf timber battened gate to carriage arch. Cut calp limestone surround and timber battened door to opening to east, blocked to rear.

The wall enclosing the Royal Barracks to the south was constructed to designs by Francis Johnston in 1816 and incorporates gateways paired with guardhouses, each providing a sense of context for the other. This refined and well composed gateway, although less elaborate than its corresponding entrance to the east, makes a strong, formal statement of security with its attached guard house. High quality cut granite is employed, creating a visual contrast with the calp used for the walls and the gatehouse.
