Murphystown Castle (in ruins)

Located to the E of Murphystown Road and Mount Eagle Lawn in the landscaped grounds of Glencairn. A fragment of a probable tower house inside the entrance gate of the British Embassy. The tower house comprises of portions of two walls built of granite masonry (Wall Wth 1.1m). Traces of a vault over the original ground floor are visible. (ITA Survey, 1945; Mc Dix 1897, 199). Formerly, the lands on which the castle is located were the W boundary of the demesne lands of Kill of the Grange and were held successively by the Howels, the Cruises and subsequently Christchurch Cathedral (Anon 1900, 191). Built as a tower house, likely by a local gentry family in the 16th or 17th century, Murphystown Castle is remembered for its historical presence within the Glencairn estate and its current role as a fragmentary feature within the British Embassy's entrance.
