Mull of Oa is a prominent headland on the Isle of Mull, composed mainly of basalt and formed during the Palaeogene period, around 60 to 55 million years ago, as a result of volcanic activity associated with the opening of the North Atlantic. It is notable for its dramatic sea cliffs and as a key location for studying the geological history of the British Tertiary Volcanic Province.
