St Ternan's Episcopal Church at Muchalls is associated with St Ternan, a 7th-century Irish monk and missionary linked to the spread of Christianity in northern Scotland. Local tradition holds that he founded a monastery at nearby Ternan, and holy wells or sites connected to him were often believed to possess healing properties.
