What is recorded here
Carved limestone milestone, made c.1760, set inton parapet of Mountbellew Bridge. Two sides have inscribed town names and distances in miles: 'Dublin to Mount Bellew Bridge 79M, To Galway 23, Tuam 12, Dunmore 12'.
This milepost, unusually set within a bridge, marks the distance to Dublin, Galway and Ballinasloe, amongst other places. Crafted from local limestone, it is a simply detailed and handsome addition to the industrial heritage of Mountbellew.
This does not grant access. Most recorded buildings are privately owned; view them only from public ground unless the owner allows entry.
