Monks Mound rises above Collinsville as the largest pre-Columbian earthwork north of Mesoamerica, built between 950 and 1100 CE. Hundreds of workers moved tons of soil by hand to shape a flat-topped platform where ceremonial life gathered. The mound still stands as a visible record of Mississippian organisation, patience and scale.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOUND - raised rath?: THE FORT. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.; UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
