MOUND: MAGNUS' GRAVE in Demesne OF Down; Downpatrick

MOUND: MAGNUS' GRAVE

What is recorded here

Magnus' Grave marks the burial place of King Magnus Barefoot, who died near Downpatrick in 1103 after escaping a failed campaign in Ireland. The simple railway halt opened in 1995 beside the old barrow, giving ordinary travellers an unusual neighbour: a Viking king still resting beneath the soil while trains pass into the Quoile Marshes.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as MOUND: MAGNUS' GRAVE. Recorded period: UNCERTAIN. Recorded protection: Scheduled. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
