Mound in Gortnagane

In rough hill pasture, on the N-facing slopes of The Paps of Dana. A circular sod-covered mound (diam. 7m; H 1.2m) of earth and stones with an uneven top and sloping sides. The remains of two small stone-built lintelled structures, built against the mound at SE and SW, are most likely to be animal shelters and post date the mound. The function of the mound is uncertain. An enclosure (KE068-046----) lies c. 30m to the SE and a hut site (KE068-108----) is c. 115m to the ENE. Neolithic burial mound, dating to approximately 4000–2500 BCE. Its construction and location suggest a ceremonial or funerary function within a prehistoric landscape of ritual significance.
