Mound in Dromkeen West

Mound

What is recorded here

Lisnacallee, the ringfort of the hag, stood in Dromkeen West until men levelled it into ordinary soil. Maps from 1841 and 1916 still outline its circular boundary, preserving a shape the land has forgotten. The hag may have lived there, or the name may be a joke told by frightened children, but either way the mound resisted human claims. It took seven years to build and one afternoon to erase, which suggests hags do not trust permanence.
Lisnacallee/Lios na Caillí (ringfort of the hag; KE015-043----). This circular enclosure is marked on the 1841-42 and 1916 OS maps, and on the earlier edition 'cave' (KE015-043001-) is marked in the interior. However, this site has been levelled and no trace survives. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 563. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
