Mound in Coill Bhaile Uí Fhlaithimh

A roughly circular, flat-topped mound situated on the lower S slopes of the valley through which the Owencashla river flows. It is composed mainly of stone, with some clay intermingled, and is now partly grass-grown. It measures 7.1m x 6.2m at base and is a maximum of c. 1m high. A tree is growing at the NW edge and much of the W sector is very disturbed. The mound is incorporated into what appears to be a disused field boundary which is marked partly by a low scarp and partly by a line of tree stumps. The above description is derived from J. is likely a passage tomb or cairn dating to the Neolithic or early Bronze Age. Its construction and location suggest it was used as a burial or ritual site, typical of prehistoric funerary practices in the region.
