Mound in Ballygrenane

Clearly marked on the 1841-42 OS map as a circular enclosure, KE010-073---- is also marked on the 1939 map, though not as clearly defined. A quarry lies immediately E of this site. Today this possible rath has been much distorted and only survives as a sub-oval area which rises to a maximum of 2.5m above the surrounding land. 2m NE of this site is a mound (KE010-073001-) with a depression in the centre. This feature is possibly connected to the fort. The interior is sloping NW and is at a higher level than the surrounding land. The above description is derived from C. A possible ringfort (rath), dating to the early medieval period (c. 500–1200 AD), its significance lies in its long cartographic record and potential as a settlement or defensive site in a rural landscape altered by later quarrying.
