Mound in Annaghkeen

At W end of a low gravel ridge near E shore of Lough Corrib. Known locally as 'An Carn Bheag', it was described in 1925 as 'an untouched Cairn of stones' (Costello 1924a, 118). What is visible is a low poorly preserved and densely overgrown almost circular mound (D c. 21.5m) with a central depression, suggesting some robbing out of material. Possibly similar to GA055-001001-, 675m to NNE, and GA055-006----, 750m to NE. Neolithic passage tomb; dates to the earlier part of the Neolithic period in Ireland (c. 3500–2500 BCE). Its location near Lough Corrib suggests it may be part of a broader network of ceremonial or funerary sites in the region.
