Ballymadrough motte stands sixty feet tall on the grounds of Seafield House, its oval frame stretching twenty-two metres north to south and fifteen east to west. The steep slopes rise to a rounded top now softened by trees, hiding the castle purpose that once commanded the prominent position. What is certain is the shape: a deliberate mound built to be seen, climbed and defended before anyone thought to plant it.
