Mortimer's Castle

Mortimer's Castle stands on the east bank of Lough Derravaragh in County Westmeath, a large Anglo-Norman fortress dating from the fourteenth or fifteenth century. Roger Mortimer, 4th Earl of March, may have owned it before dying in an ambush, though Edmund de Mortimer, 5th Earl of March, is also named in other accounts. Only a two-storey stone tower remains in the northwest corner of the huge rectangular site, while local legend claims a black cat still guards buried gold in a hidden cellar.
