What is recorded here

Elstow's Moot Hall was built around 1500 as a timber-framed market hall for the abbey. Shops occupied the ground floor, while the upper room held manor business and settled traders' disputes. John Bunyan later used the hall while forming his nonconformist religious ideas. Major Simon Whitbread gave it to the county in 1950; restoration for the Festival of Britain led to its opening as a Bunyan museum in 1951.

Originally commissioned as a market hall for Elstow Abbey in 1500.

People and work

Ground-floor shops served the abbey market. Upstairs, the manor court met and a special market court settled disputes between traders. John Bunyan later used the hall while forming the religious ideas for which he became known; the Whitbread family allowed his followers to meet there during the nineteenth century.

How it changed

Extended to the east in the 16th century, replaced wattle and daub with bricks around the same time, and underwent restoration by Bedfordshire County Council in 1950 as part of the Festival of Britain celebrations.

What survives

The timber frame, tiled roof, projecting upper floor and former shop openings remain, with the extra eastern bay and brick infill added in the sixteenth century. It has displayed objects connected with John Bunyan since opening as a museum in 1951.

Why it mattered

The same upper room links Elstow Abbey's market, local justice and Bunyan's religious movement. Major Simon Whitbread's 1950 gift and the county council restoration kept a working piece of village government standing instead of reducing Bunyan's local connection to a plaque or copy.
